Debate Review: Christians and Atheists

Apologia Studios posted a debate that Jeff Durbin and James White were involved in arguing for the existence of the Trinitarian God of the Bible against Dr.Clark and Dan Ellis.

You can watch the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx0rlVap194

Firstly,  I would like to address the fact that I highly respect Jeff Durbin and James White for their apologetic ministry and their heart for evangelism. I came across both of these men a few years ago when I saw videos of them a few years ago addressing the theological issues in Mormonism (or LDS as they prefer to be called now) when compared to Biblical Christianity. While I do not agree with them in every theological belief, I do believe that these men stand for the core and essential doctrines that make the Christian faith.

As I continued to watch I really was displeased with the attitude of Dr.Clark in his demeanor. His argumentation was non-existent and therefore the debate was somewhat of a let down to me. But as I couldn’t help but think to myself… “What kind of person has so much hatred against God, that it affects their ability to debate properly?” And I came to this conclusion, Dr.Clark is a man who works closely with amputees and people who have generally been disabled in various different ways. He sees himself as the help that these people are getting, and if there really is a God… then why isn’t He helping? If there really is a God then He must not be good at all but a monster (Godzilla).

So if Dr.Clark is helping people and God isn’t willing to help, then he must be better than the very God that Christians describe as all holy and all good. This is a problem for him and you can see it clearly expressed throughout the debate.

I urge you that if you struggle with this kind of doubt or wrestling with this topic then please go to your Pastor or a Christian friend because this is something that we should wrestle with and search God’s Word for the answers.

My personal conclusion to this kind of doubt is this… mankind sinned against God and continues to do so. God is a good judge and must punish evil. If mankind continues to sin and commit evil acts then what must God do? He must punish sinners and evildoers. But God offered His Son to take that punishment for us so that all we need to do is repent of our sin and place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation as our Lord.

A monster god would never offer its own son to save evil people, but the God of the Bible does offer us a way to be forgiven and have eternal life with Him.

2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

Ezekiel 33:11 “Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?”

I honestly felt bad for Dan Ellis even if I disagree with him. Dan seemed to be struggling in the debate not because of his own lack of knowledge or self-control, but because Dr.Clark was dragging him through the mud. This is sad to see because debates are meant to educate and talk through the subject matter, not rant about our feelings on the topic and interrupt the other debaters.

I hope that this is not the last that we will see of a Jeff Durbin and James White debate duo, although I believe that it may not be necessary. Jeff Durbin and James White both have very similar debate tactics and beliefs. So there were things said that could be attributed to both of them interchangeably when you think about it. This isn’t a problem for me, I just feel like they would both be able to stand on their own and it wouldn’t do the other any harm.

God Bless!
